Bespoke Tour Guides

TOUR GUIDES

As well as arranging your tour and accommodation, we provide our clients – at no extra cost – a pretty comprehensive ‘bespoke’ guide to battlefields visited, complete with strategic and tactical background. Sir Alistair Horne, the late distinguished military historian, called them ‘all you need to know about what you’re seeing and why and how the battle was fought’. Both Tony and Nicky Bird have published books and (quite) learned articles, and have lectured. Some people pay to hear them; and have bought their books. The brochures illustrated here are a selection; they range from over 100 pages to less than 20, but are easily digestible and contain quirky information not usually found in guidebooks or histories. They can be referred to on your trip or enjoyed afterwards when the place names and layout of the battlefield make more sense.

The colour guides are A4 and are usually ring bound. They include such essential information as where you will lunch and dine. As such, some of the older itineraries can date (where hotels and restaurants fold), but the scholarship reflects modern reassessments. The WESTERN FRONT APPENDIX contains short entries on important matters like the rum ration; but also touches on those horrors of war – mud, rats and lice.

We can send a printed copy of a BIRD BATTLEFIELD TOURS itinerary. Please contact NICKY BIRD at nick@nickybirddesign.com for an estimate of printing and postage.
