WW2 BOMBER USAAF and BOMBER COMMAND BASES

The recent tour of WW2 BOMBER USAAF and BOMBER COMMAND BASES in East Anglia and Lincolnshire (Mike and David Simmons), a highlight of which was seeing bases, control towers and runways – many unspoilt by time – from the air in a light aircraft. The Lancaster is the Just Jane, preserved at East Kirkby (Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre), which taxis around the perimeter track. A word of advice. One can, for a large sum, sit in the aircraft as it goes on its half-hour tour. But you see little from inside and it is more fun and cheaper to watch from the tarmac. Nothing stirs the pulse like the sound of her Merlins spluttering into life…
